Do Recommend: Fruits Basket anime/manga
Disclaimer: I come late to anime and manga fandom. So things that most people watched/read years ago (you know, when they came out) I am just now discovering. On the plus side, I always have something new to read! The downside: while I'm squeeing over cute little rat drawings (a strange phrase), the rest of teh internets says "been there, done that." So bear with me, please.

Finished the anime today, and boy, did it take a turn for the dark and depressing at the end. The last three episodes or so are dedicated to Kyo's transformation, with events slightly altered to be more ending-ish than they were in the manga. I liked the bonus Akito appearance - he does not get enough screen time! (What can I say? He's so bad, it's good.) - and I think Shigure's extra lines/scenes were excellent and appropriate. I was not as thrilled by Tohru's little detour to the graveyard, and the forced Hana/Uou appearance. A lot of angst for what's been a primarily cheerful series (in the anime), and like the manga, it eventually makes you want to smack the characters upside the head and yell "pull yourself together!" (Or maybe that's just me?)

I also read volume 15 of the manga today, where more details about Yuki's childhood are finally revealed. I really enjoy the growth his character has shown over the last several volumes. The manga impacts me more than the anime did, and today was not the first time I've teared up over especially emotional passages. The smoosh! And woob! It slays me.

(I've always thought the way the rat is drawn is adorable - little tiny feet! itty arms! - but the flashback where Yuki tears up in rat form is full of aaawwwww and smooooosh, and I think the adorable little rat drawings are my kryptonite. The cute! I'm defenseless.)

Fruits Basket still feels like a guilty pleasure - relationships! feelings! eeek! - but the aawww has captured me and I can't put it down.

Edit: spell-check does not recognize 'kryptonite' but offers 'krypton' and 'krypton's' as a replacement. wtf spell-check?

I avoided FuruBa for the longest time on account of the art style (Tohru's eyes...so huge...). But one day, a librarian friend of mine who runs a local teen center invited me over to screen some anime to see if they were appropriate for that age group. One of the shows was Fruits Basket, and we were hooked instantly!

I *heart* Shigure and Ayame!

[Late reply...*sheepish*]

Shigure and Ayame rock my socks! (Hatori's ok.)

I know exactly what you mean - on the surface FB looks like it might dissolve your brain with the pink and the flowers and oh god the eyes. But it's actually quite charming. :)
